CALPAC in the Past

Established in 1879

Historical synopsis

With the increasing desire for us to hanker after bygone days, how fortunate we find ourselves to be associated with one of the oldest Angling Associations in the country.
CALPAC was original formed in 1879, long before the advent of the Motor Car, and most certainly before the digital media age, we now find our lives dominated by. The association was primarily formed to offer Angling to clubs, who were not in a position to purchase their own fisheries, to gain access to a good days fishing. This good days fishing may have been acquired by a ride on the early morning milk train, as it would have been one of the only modes of transport available at this time.
With the passing of time, and the development of the Internal Combustion Engine, CALPAC grew as an association. This growth, culminated in a boom with the number of clubs wishing to affiliate, so much so, that in 1964, a temporary limitation was put the number of clubs being accepted at 150! This limitation remained in place until further venues were available.
The association has always had a good match fishing section. This was recognised many years ago, by one of the country’s most famous fishing tackle manufactures, ‘Hardy Bros (Alnwick) Ltd’, who donated the Hardy Championship Cup, which was to be competed for as an individual championship trophy. This trophy still takes pride of place in the yearly fixture list, which is available to our affiliated clubs.

Present Day CALPAC
CALPAC is fundamentally in a good position at present, with an average membership, encompassing both associate members and affiliated clubs. Their portfolio of waters includes one of the top Barbel fisheries in the country, Padworth on the River Kennet, alongside a stunning 3 acre lake in Cobham, Manor Pond, which is home to some very large Tench and Carp. There is a full committee of officers, who are very pro-active in the day to day running of the association, whilst also embracing the need to change into an association equipped to deal with the 21st century and ever changing society and environment.
CALPAC in the future
CALPAC will aim to be recognised as one of the leading Angling Bodies in the way it has adapted to the changes in society and the environment. Conservation will play an important part in every decision the association takes on improvement plans for its fisheries. As custodians of land and water, the emphasis will be placed on limiting any impact work may have on local wildlife and fauna, because a healthy biodiversity is paramount in providing a healthy fishery.
CALPAC will also aim to be a fully inclusive association, inviting ideas from all members on ways to improve aspects of how it is managed, and how it manages its self.
CALPAC will strive to engage the wider community in the role Angling has to play in the development of caring for the environment, and the benefits that it brings to all.

Vision Statement

CALPAC, having provided ‘Angling for All’ since 1879, will strive to ensure they continue to do this into the next century.
They aim to achieve this by becoming a fully inclusive association, involving all members in the decision making. This will provoke a much more captive audience when dealing with the association’s day to day running, so providing excellent fisheries, at an affordable price, whilst giving as much access as possible to all members of society.
The association will always promote itself as an organisation that wants to help smaller clubs gain access to waters they cannot afford to own themselves. This fully supports the original ethos of why CALPAC was formed in 1879. These core values will still be embraced by the committee, and used to promote Angling to the wider community.
What the association wants to do now is operate as a 21st century business, with the main focus on marketing itself through the use of modern media methods. This strategy will be used to raise the profile of CALPAC, throughout the Angling Industry.
CALPAC, as an association, is determined to improve its profile, through the careful management of its fisheries. The association are fully aware of the important role they have to play in caring for the environment. They will look at all aspects of biodiversity when making decisions on fishery improvements, with the emphasis on delivering the correct balance with nature. Conservation will always be at the forefront of any plans to improve the fisheries, limiting any impact on wildlife and vegetation. Education, plays an important part with this aspect of management, the association will aim to work as prime educators to all of its members.

Aims and Objectives

Provide excellent Angling opportunities for all. To be financially self sufficient. Involve all members in CALPAC’s future. To manage the biodiversity carefully on all fisheries.
Increase overall membership by at least 10%. Ensure membership fees are set at a rate to cover all associations costs. Ensure fisheries are accessible to all, throughout the season. Give all members the chance to have a say in the running of CALPAC. Give advice to all members on caring for all aspects of CALPAC’s fisheries.
Offer members a good product at a fair price. Market all things that are positive about CALPAC membership. Carry out annual surveys, to gain feedback from members. Add links to website detailing SSSI status, local wildlife and fauna. Have a full management plan in place for all CALPAC fisheries. Increase Stillwater ownership. Email monthly delegates meeting minutes to every member. Offer incentives to encourage members to attend work parties.
